Dear Wonder Women,
The first time I received a massage I was 23 and training to be a yoga teacher. I had known about massage for most of my life, but it never really appealed to me. My Aunt Helen would often attempt to give me shoulder massages as a teenager and I would squirm away from her grasp, uncomfortable and withdrawn.
But during the course of the intensive yoga training I underwent at Kripalu Center in the Berkshires of Massachusetts my body awareness awakened for the first time in a long time. The training was life transforming on many levels. I began to feel more. To pay better attention to my needs. To practice more compassion for myself and others.
And eventually the training led me to the table of a wonderful therapist at Kripalu who offered me basic Swedish massage where I felt nurtured and affirmed. This experience set me on the path where I have been for the past decade – head and shoulders deep into this vast river called The Healing Arts.
While I no longer teach yoga, looking back I see that it was yoga that led me to bodywork, and that bodywork is the place where my passion and talents intersect most powerfully.
